Detailed description
The mining in the Verbandsgemeinde Flammersfeld began over 1000 years ago in open pit mining in the forests of the so-called "Horhauser Gangzug" (area of Horhausen). The 56 m high headframe of the Georg mine is the symbol of modern iron ore mining in the region. With the closure of this mine on March 31, 1965, iron ore mining in the so-called "Wieder-Bezirk" came to an end, and 550 miners became unemployed.
During operation, there were two shaft systems (shaft I and II), each with a separately erected headframe. The still existing headframe is located directly above shaft system II, which has a maximum depth (in mining terms: Teufe) of around 970 m. The mine was known for its high ore deposits, as alongside the so-called iron spar (also called siderite) there was a high proportion of manganese. In total, around 6.5 million tons of iron ore were extracted.
The headframe of the Georg mine stands as a landmark of the region and is clearly visible from afar directly along the A3 motorway and the ICE route Cologne-Frankfurt. In 1988, the tower was declared an industrial monument and was renovated with state funds in 1994/95.
Current information
Unfortunately, tours in the winding tower of the Georg mine are currently not possible due to structural safety reasons.
Climbing up to the winding wheels is also unfortunately prohibited at this time. We ask for your understanding.
The winding tower can be viewed from the outside at any time. Especially when the tower is illuminated in green and red colors, a close-up view is worth it.
Freely accessible and large information boards tell about the history of mining in the region.
